Snap On 13 - Update #1

Updated: Sep 9, 2023

For Blog #1, the discuss prompt questions are:

  1. For your current top project pick, provide a brief background motivation statement that cites external references to explain the general problem and the impacts a solution may have.

Our project seeks to solve a problem most homes with centralized A.C. units face, which is the inability to effectively maintain multiple rooms at the same constant temperature. We seek to create an automated vent that can replace the one already existing in the A.C. system of a home to regulate flow as an alternative to things like multiple mini splits. Some constraints we will have will be the dimensions of our vents, the area where the air flows through the vent, and the shape of the vent blades. We plan to conduct research on existing air vents in homes to define our initial dimensions and designs, which we will then use to create a modified design to go along with the automation we seek to implement

An obstacle we expect to face will be programming the vents, particularly with creating a code for how much we want a vent to open or close depending on the temperature it reads in a room. Which leads to another obstacle, which is figuring out how to get multiple vents to communicate with each other. The communication between vents is just as crucial as being able to read the temperature because that is how we will be able to decrease the flow of rooms where the temperature is steady, and increase the flow to a temperature that is struggling to maintain a constant temperature.

In the first figure we have a centralized unit set at 70 degrees fahrenheit for 3 rooms. Due to some unknown conditions one of these rooms is at a higher temperature of 76 degrees fahrenheit. Our device, as seen in the second figure, will detect the outlying room and adjust the vents of the rooms at the correct temperature in order to increase the flow towards the, in this case, warmer room.
